Rasmus Sandin is making his mark over in the Ontario Hockey League. Sandin, who is on loan to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds from Rögle BK (SHL), has acquired 20 points in 23 games – four goals and 16 assists. In last night’s game against the Flint Firebirds, Sandin scored two goals and had an assist, becoming the Greyhound’s first rookie defenseman to pot a pair since 2011. In addition, he was named first star of the game.

Sandin was drafted by the Greyhounds in the first round of the 2017 CHL Import Draft. In an article posted to the team’s website back in October, GM Kyle Raftis had some positive things to say about Sandin joining the squad:

“This is something we have been working towards for some time now. We are very excited to have a resolution and add a player of Sandin’s calibre to our group. As an extremely intelligent puck moving defensemen it will be a great boost to our blueline moving forward.”

Sandin is also ranked 30th on Sportsnet’s 2018 Draft Prospect Rankings, which came out last month.

Welcome to the Family – Axel J Fjällby

Playmaker is proud to welcome Axel Jonsson Fjällby to the family! The 19-year-old Stockholm native, nicknamed “Tarzan”, was drafted 147th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft by the Washington Capitals. Standing at six feet tall and weighing 185 lbs, the high-energy left winger currently plays for Djurgårdens IF of the Swedish Hockey League, an organization he’s been with since the 2013-2014 season. Last season Fjällby even served as an Assistant Captain for DIF’s J20 team. In addition, he has represented Sweden at the U18, U19 and U20 levels.

“He skates with a low center of gravity and flies around the ice like a wrecking ball, using his size and speed to be a disruptive force,” said SBN College Hockey of Fjällby. “He knocks opponents off the puck and makes offensive plays by out-hustling the other team . . . Jonsson Fjällby is definitely a third or fourth line grinder at the NHL level. Given another few years to develop, he could be a very valuable piece as a guy that could fill one of those roles on an entry-level contract, a huge plus in the modern NHL. He’ll need to play high-energy, good defensive hockey in order to stick in the big leagues, but has shown the ability to do that.” https://www.japersrink.com/2016/6/25/12030812/washington-capitals-draft-axel-jonsson-fjallby

Nylander Showdown

Nylander Showdown

Last night was nothing but special for the Nylander family, as Alex Nylander made his NHL debut with the Buffalo Sabres against none other than brother William Nylander and the Toronto Maple Leafs – the first matchup of many. Alex, who wore number 70, recorded 14:38 of ice time in the Sabres 4-2 loss, while William become the 4th rookie in Leafs history to hit 60 points with his assist on Auston Matthews’ first period goal.

Michael Nylander, along with the rest of the Nylander clan, was in the audience to witness his two sons play against each other in the NHL for the very first time:

William Nylander to Team Sweden

William Nylander to Team Sweden

Recently ending his season with the Toronto Maple Leafs after being knocked out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Washington Capitals in game six of the first round, William Nylander has joined Team Sweden for the IIHF World Championships in Paris and Cologne.

Nylander, who has previously played for Sweden six times, ended his regular season with the Leafs with 22 goals and 61 points in 81 games, adding one goal and four points in six playoff games. Now, he’s looking forward to representing his home country in his first World Championship appearance.

“I’m looking forward to getting out there, getting on the ice, putting on the jersey,” said the 21 year-old center. “I’m just looking forward to getting the tournament started.”

Nylander will be joining a team that is made up of many other talented Swedish NHL players, including Gabriel Landeskog, Victor Hedman, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson to name a few.

“It feels amazing because those were guys you looked up to when you were younger,” said Nylander. “I always knew they were great players and now I finally get to play on the same team with them, and being on the national team makes it even more special. We got a great team so I’m excited.”

This is the first time Nylander will be playing for Sweden since the 2015-2016 World Junior Championship, where he was forced to leave the team after taking a bad hit in game one against Switzerland. Naturally, he has high hopes this time around.

“I expect it to be fun,” Nylander said. “I expect that we can go pretty far in the tournament and I hope we’re able to reach the medal games.”

Sweden’s first game of the tournament will be against Russia on May 5th at Laxness Arena in Cologne, Germany.
